I am going to write a new article about the Cubs every month of the 2004 Cubs season. Here is issue #3.

Cubs and Cards
June 2004

The Cubs are looking up at the Cards. We need to get healthy and start winning these division games.

Cubs vs. Sox

I think the Sox fans would be fine if they went 6-156 as long as the 6 wins were against the Cubs. In other words, Sox fans bug me. I was just thinking, the Sox don't even know how to spell socks. White socks like the things you wear on your feet are spelled s o c k s, not s o x. They are dumb. Well as of this moment it looks like the Sox are moving up and the Cubs down. I hope this doesn't last. Funny thing is that the Cubs still have a better record. But the bottom line is that the Cubs are chasing the Cardinals not the Sox. So who cares about the Sox? I don't. And I don't think Sox fans do either. All I think they care about is beating the Cubs.

I hate the Cardinals. I hate them more now that they are in 1st place. They are a talented team but there is something about their players that bothers me. I think it is like the look on Jim Edmonds face. Like when he pretended he was gonna catch a fly ball against the Cubs and the ball was hit over his head. I just don't like the look on his face. It is like he thinks he is better than everyone. I don't know. I guess this is just what a rival is about. And how Larussa and Baker are always jawing at each other. This is actually kind of fun as I think more about it. If the Cubs and Cards are close at the end of the year, this will be exciting. I kind of feel like a Red Sox fan.

Kerry Wood

Kerry Wood has to come back soon. We really need Glendon Rusch's left arm to fill in the pen and we need Wood back in the rotation. Wood is a leader. I think he takes pressure off of other guys on the staff like Clement and Zambrano because he shows emotion and doesn't take crap from anyone. I think Woody leads by his example. I love the Cubs pitching staff ... at least the pitching staff we were supposed to have this year. Let's get Wood back and lets win some games.

July is important. We need to beat up on NL Central. We play the Cardinals and Brewers a lot. We need to win 2 out of 3 in each series and gain some ground. This will define the success of our season and if the Cubs are a game or two of the 1st place team in a week or so maybe Jim Hendry will make a move or two to solidify our bullpen (John Smoltz) and maybe add a middle infielder that is a true lead off hitter (Ichiro). This is the dog days of Summer. This is where the Cubs can prove to the sportswriters that they are one of the best teams in baseball.
